Multiple methods should be used to help child welfare workers acquire the necessary competencies. Acquisition of competencies should be a continual process. Child welfare practitioners should enter the field with a minimum background and knowledge (e.g., a bachelor's or master's degree in social work), which can then be built on through training, supervision, and on-the-job experience. Competencies can also be acquired through effective and ongoing supervision as well as peer support and consultative activities.
