Persons with disabilities are more likely to earn lower incomes or be unemployed and live in conditions of poverty than the rest of the population in countries throughout the world, and women with disabilities may be particularly disadvantaged. This may place women with disabilities at risk for HIV infection through the need to turn to prostitution or transactional sex as a means of financial and material support. Persons with disabilities in South Africa are also reported to be disproportionately unemployed and poorer than the rest of the population. Poverty may act as a barrier to accessing health care.
