I imagine that the most important starting point is to identify how the individual imagines his/her future and how that matches with his/her capabilities. He/she may not have a vision of a future so the step before that is to explore some starting points which may or may not succeed, e.g. a love of animals may suggest that the person may find satisfaction working with or volunteering in an animal pound, then again that may fail, but at least something has been tried and some experience gained.
