The benefits of physical activity in aging cohorts have been long established, with longitudinal studies demonstrating that greater exercise participation predicts lower risk of mortality, disability, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer. As such, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 30 min of exercise 5 days/week to obtain health benefits. Not only is physical activity associated with improved health, it is also a predictor of better cognitive outcomes. Additionally, physical exercise also appears to enhance emotional functioning in older adults. Overall, there is substantial support to suggest that physical activity across the life-span has beneficial effects on various facets of successful aging.
