Language tends to shape beliefs about a person’s potential needs and desires. Language is very often the way the subjective norm is communicated. A Parliamentary Committee on the Status of Disabled Persons in Canada concluded that vocabulary can orient an entire perception in the public mind; pejorative or negative words not only bias a person’s understanding, but trivialize genuine community support for people with disabilities.
