Can a psychological distancing tool benefit families in coping with ‘caregiver burden’ associated with caring for a relative with dementia?

This is an interesting question. As a researcher on families but also as a family caregiver, I would expect this to have mixed results. It may be helpful in some families and harmful in others. This is because I believe that "burden" is only a part of the equation. Social distancing may relieve stress and anxiety but it will also decrease any sense of reward for caregivers. It is also likely to increase the risk of abuse and neglect in some families. I expect that in some families that are struggling with managing daily routines and overanxious, distancing may be helpful. In other families that are managing and want to care for a disabled family member, distancing will have extremely destructive effects.
