Let’s say you design a study to test whether changes in room temperature affect math test scores.

Your independent variable is the temperature of the room. You vary the room temperature by making it cooler for one-third of the participants and warmer for the other one-third. The temperature keeps unchanged for the remaining one-third participants. Your dependent variable is math test scores collected before and after the intervention. You measure the math skills of all participants using a standardized test. Then you can use a regression equation:
