Good question! Then, one key policy implication is that criminal justice sanctions should (wherever possible) minimize the impact on employment prospects and familial relations. For example, there is a strong body of research that links offending to drug and alcohol misuse, and tackling this is already a key Scottish Government priority. However, the causes of misuse may be rooted within low levels of self-control. It is therefore argued that measures to improve levels of self-control via more consistent and effective parenting interventions could help reduce offending.
