Assessments of family functioning evaluate the environmental, cultural, social, physical, and psychological functioning of its members. The primary difference between family assessment and individual assessment is a focus on the entire family as a unit as opposed to focusing on a single individual within the family. Given that the family needs vary considerably depending on developmental levels of family members, community assets, and access to cultural, financial, material, and human resources, it is important for practitioners to evaluate both family strengths and needs in each of these areas.
