Images of old age also change as part of late modernity. Old age used to be defined as something at the periphery of society, denoting the sick, passive, elderly person in need of care. Increasingly, old age is at the center of our concern, and not just in connection with issues of health. We witness a new paradigm of aging that foregrounds the active and healthy old person, an emphasis on the pleasant side of aging, where issues of dependency and loneliness are silenced. Old age is viewed devoid of disease and disability, and an ideal of successful aging is promoted. This paradigm combines discourses on healthy aging, independent living, successful aging and agelessness. This new paradigm—and the reframing of care needs—offers the elderly the hope of regaining autonomy and prolonging a healthy life if possible.
