We compare the test statistic to a critical value from a chi-square distribution to decide whether it’s big enough to reject the null hypothesis that the two variables are unrelated. To do that, we should calculate the expected frequencies and chi-square, find the critical chi-square value, compare the chi-square value to the critical value, and then decide whether to reject the null hypothesis.
