Young people today face new risks at school and in advanced educational institutions in which the young people are increasingly expected to negotiate as individuals rather than as members of a collectivity. Demand for advanced educational credentials and flexible specializations associated with post-Fordist economies means that individuals are constantly held accountable for their performance and face increased risks should they fail. Collective identities, once manifest in class-based resistance to the school, have weakened as experiences have diversified and underlying class relationships have become obscure, although traditional sources of inequality remain intact.
