It is important to identify which specific function(s) of reminiscence you are interested in as different functions have been shown empirically to be associated with different mental health and social outcomes. For instance, using the Reminiscence Functions Scale (RFS), those persons whose reminiscence for "bitterness revival" reasons tend to be more anxious, depressed, and neurotic. Those persons who employ more social functions of reminiscing (e.g., "teach/inform) tend to be happier, have more positive memories, and more secure attachment patterns.
