What challenges would children with disabilities face in their development process?

Children with disabilities enter the world with minority status. Typically, the sole disabled family member, they are socialized at home and in the larger society in accordance with the norms and attitudes displayed in both these environments. Children with disabilities are likely to witness the stigmatization and ostracization of disabled peers and have few adults with disabilities after which to model themselves. They acquire self-concepts amid a variety of mixed familial, peer, societal, and media messages that question their potential for life relationship success as well as their worth as human beings. They become objectified through politically correct labels and medicalization, wherein health professionals equate who children are with the level of function of their bodies. Children with disabilities may feel they lack control not only over how their bodies feel and respond but also over who touches their bodies, and when, how, and for whom their “defective parts” are placed on display. Children who are disabled may also come to understand genetic testing and disease prevention strategies to mean that people like themselves should not be born and that a life like theirs is not worth living.
