To prepare for working with a deaf client, the worker should learn about deafness, its etiology, and its effects, as well as about the common methods of communication used by deaf people.
Most deaf and hard-of-hearing people are extremely adept at communicating via computer, their primary communication method. You may share the same computer passed between you as you write your communication.
Many clients who lose hearing later in life have become proficient lip readers. Others may use sign language and lip reading depending on the setting and needs. It is important to sit directly facing the clients so that they can see your mouth movements. Focus the light in the room such that your face is clearly in the light rather than in shadow. To ensure your client understands what you have said, ask for confirmation and/or paraphrase your statement to allow another opportunity. Suppose you present vital information or ask the client to make a major decision and want to be sure they understand what you have said. You may supplement your verbal discussion with a computer-written statement in that case.
