The relationship between suicide attempts and drug abuse is significant and multifaceted. Individuals who abuse substances, particularly alcohol and opioids, exhibit a markedly higher risk of suicide attempts. Studies indicate that alcohol dependence increases suicide risk by tenfold, while those who inject drugs face a fourteenfold increased risk.

Substance abuse can exacerbate mental health issues, leading to impulsivity and disinhibition, which heighten the likelihood of suicide attempts. Additionally, individuals may use drugs as a form of self-medication for underlying psychological distress, further complicating their mental health landscape.
