Not really. In my understanding, the use of randomized controlled trials may be viewed as unethical in settings that receive funding to provide treatment. Because they require that either treatment be withheld, or an alternative treatment be offered. But withholding the treatment from active clients is inconsistent with funding guidelines. Often, in these situations, individuals are offered a comparable intervention which is not the intervention of interest in the research study. Also, utilizing the strongest research design possible is acceptable, given that such an approach is scientifically justified.
