Considerable evidence indicates that early events and achievements have persistent effects on psychiatric status throughout adulthood. Education is most strongly related to psychiatric morbidity in later life. Among older adults, low levels of education are strongly associated with high levels of depressive symptoms, and they have also been found to be a significant predictor of incident cases of major depression and of Alzheimer’s disease.
