Trauma-informed social work practice is particularly relevant when providing services to criminal justice-involved populations. For several reasons, these practices should be integrated with interventions and services. First, the interventions described above have the potential to be traumatic events. Second, involvement in the criminal justice system, which occurs before these interventions, can also be traumatic. Finally, the life experiences of individuals with criminal justice system involvement are characterized by traumatic events and situations such as exposure to community violence, child abuse and sexual abuse, interpersonal violence, poverty, separation and loss, mental illness, homelessness, and alcohol and substance abuse. These traumatic events contribute to offending behavior and criminal justice involvement.

Trauma-informed social work practice is an approach that recognizes the sources and effects of traumatic events and enhances trauma recovery. Competent trauma-informed practice social work practice is classified as advanced social work practice. Helping individuals recover from trauma requires that social workers understand the traumatic effects of criminal justice involvement with judges, police officers, and other criminal justice practitioners as individuals seek to resolve the legal issues they experience. This should be accomplished without causing further trauma by providing interventions that provide trauma assessments and reduce trauma.
