Transportation issues have long been recognized as one of the, if not the, most pressing rural service access problem. Low population densities and centralization of services, coupled with the lack of public transit systems, create significant problems of service access for older rural residents. Besides, older rural residents, especially the very old, face acute and chronic health problems that require formal services. But for the elderly who have health issues, appropriate professional help is quite a distance away.
