The characteristics of the older adult population in Hong Kong can be described as follows:
1. Rapidly aging population: Hong Kong has been experiencing a rapid increase in its elderly population. According to the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department, the proportion of people aged 65 and above has been rising steadily, reaching around 18% of the total population in recent years.
2. Longevity: Hong Kong has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. The average life expectancy for both men and women is over 85 years. This longevity presents both opportunities and challenges in terms of healthcare, social support, and financial planning.
3. High education levels: Older adults in Hong Kong generally have higher levels of education compared to previous generations. This contributes to their knowledge, adaptability, and engagement in various activities.
4. Multigenerational households: Multigenerational households are common in Hong Kong, where older adults often live with their adult children and grandchildren. This living arrangement reflects strong family ties and cultural values of filial piety.
5. Financial concerns: Many older adults in Hong Kong face financial concerns, particularly those who have not saved adequately for retirement. Rising living costs, healthcare expenses, and limited pension provisions can pose financial challenges for older adults.
6. Active engagement: Older adults in Hong Kong are increasingly engaged in social and community activities. They participate in senior centers, community groups, and volunteer work, which contribute to their overall well-being and social connections.
