Because some severe and sometimes fatal complications associated with diabetes can be overwhelming to individuals living with the disease. Like other chronic diseases, diabetes is associated with disproportionately high risk for psychological disorders. One of the consequences of comorbid diabetes and psychological disorders, such as depression, is that they can complicate an individual’s ability to self-manage diabetes, which can, in turn, result in even more medical complications.
