In general, a two-step process is required: (1) assessing the breadth of a child's social network (i.e., who is the child regularly in contact with?) and (2) assessing how supportive these people are from the child's perspective. It is also often helpful to distinguish different forms of support (e.g., emotional nurturance, instrumental or material aid, advice or counselling, affirmation, and protection).
