Empathic accuracy is the ability to accurately infer the specific thoughts and feelings of another person. It involves both cognitive and affective components, requiring the capacity to share another's emotional state (affect sharing) and understand their mental state (mentalizing).

Research suggests that individuals with higher empathic accuracy tend to be better adjusted socially and emotionally. For example, mothers with greater empathic accuracy towards their children have children with more positive self-concepts, while young adolescents with higher empathic accuracy have better peer relationships and fewer personal adjustment problems. Empathic accuracy is also linked to more stable romantic relationships in adulthood.
