In my opinion, one of the advantages of family involvement is that family members can contribute to decision-making. Actually, simply staying together constitutes a strength. A major strength is their intimate knowledge of the patient and what they have learned through a process of trial and error. Challenges can be probably different, depending on the caregiver burden and family members’ abilities to cope with the burden. Challenges would range from:
(1) Lack of proper education on the part of family members on how to handle the mental health, especially in the various stages of the illness.
(2) Families may face stigmatization, even from their other close relatives and friends, which may be a very difficult social challenge to deal with.
(3) Burnout should not be underestimated.
