Erikson proposed a theory of development that highlights the psychodynamic elements influential in learning and communication. Erikson considered all aspects of the individual as contributing to understanding. Communication between individuals and professionals involved in the education of students with disabilities parallels Erikson’s theory. Progress through each stage is sequential and serves as the foundation for the next stage. Each stage represents a polarity with specific issues to be resolved if the communication interaction is to proceed effectively to the next stage.
