Internalizing disorders are based on behaviours and feelings that are more inwardly directed. Because children with internalizing disorders are often not disruptive to others, these children can be overlooked and not referred for appropriate help. Anxiety and depression are the most common internalizing disorders in children, although often maltreated children experience posttraumatic stress disorder. The following is a list of some symptoms that may be normal in the short term but may be of concern if they persist or if a child experiences many of these at once: agitation, nightmares, avoidance of activities or people, difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much), difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance, irritability, being easily fatigued, poor appetite or overeating, low self-esteem, and feelings of hopelessness.
