Remaining engaged could enable the elderly to live their life actively and productively. A useful way to conceive of remaining engaged is to recognize at least four ways in which older adults can choose to stay connected to the world around them: educational activities, volunteering, caregiving, and paid employment. In turn, engagement can also be conceptualized as one of the three critical components in realizing a successful aging experience, along with avoidance of disease and disability, and high cognitive and physical function.
