Hospice care involves a team of medical, social service, and other professionals and volunteers who provide palliative care, or care that focuses on pain and symptom relief as opposed to curative treatments. Emotional and spiritual needs are also addressed. To receive hospice services, a physician must certify that a patient is terminally ill. Hospice services are typically provided in the home of a patient but can be delivered in a variety of settings such as skilled nursing facilities and freestanding hospices. Hospice services are offered on an on-call basis, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day to persons of all ages, with services being covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance
