Religion may also be an important factor when it comes to influencing the lives of poor people with a disability. It may provide an explanation for why disability occurs, for instance by stigmatising it as a ‘sin’ or less stigmatising, as ‘fate’ or ‘karma’. It may also give rules for the behaviour of men and women respectively, and the consequences of such rules may be more severe for the poor than for the more affluent person with a disability.
