This population may experience higher rates of disability and certain conditions such as obesity, HIV, substance abuse, depression, loneliness, and suicide than their heterosexual counterparts. Older adults who identify as transgender are thought to be at an even greater risk for experiencing health and mental health problems. In addition, older LGBT people have faced lifelong stigma, discrimination, and even harassment from family members, employers, and professionals. They have also dealt with governmental and organizational policies during most of their lifetimes that have not been sensitive to or supportive of their identities and relationships.
