I have worked as a correctional social worker for more than 10 years. My experience is that there are at least two unique challenges. One challenge is advocating for inmates convicted of serious crimes in a correctional environment. Second, social workers must fulfill the mandates of the correctional institution while simultaneously providing services to inmates. I observe that social workers who believe that prison administrators and correctional officers are uncaring and philosophically opposed to social work values will have difficulty working in a jail or prison system.
