Brief intervention is generally most appropriate early in the substance use spectrum, but may also be used in the context of harm reduction for individuals who are at the more severe end of the substance-use spectrum. Brief intervention may include motivational interviewing techniques or counselling according to the stage of change with which the young person identifies.
