Values are central to social work practice but can also be a source of tension and conflict. I would suggest: 1) If you see something happening in your agency or in a colleague’s work that bothers you in value terms, then take time to think about how you will tackle this openly. Do not rush in before you have a clear plan, and have looked at the situation from as many angles as possible. 2) Read about the important ‘value question’ from different angles, not just through the social work literature. There are many excellent, moving, insightful novels and autobiographical accounts by people who have experienced oppression and discrimination, have mental health problems, or are disabled. 3) If you are in the middle of a ‘values’ war with colleagues, take some ‘time out’ with yourself, stand back a moment, and try to understand what is happening and why you might be getting so heated.
