Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by an excessive focus on oneself, often involving grandiosity, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. It exists on a spectrum, ranging from normal self-admiration to pathological narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) that significantly impairs functioning.

To measure narcissism, researchers commonly use self-report instruments like the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), which assesses traits through forced-choice statements. Higher scores on the NPI indicate greater narcissistic tendencies, including entitlement and exploitative behavior.
