The de-gendering push has had different effects on the various forms of care. Care toward children, as we saw illustrated with the advertisement of the caring businessman, has changed, whereas institutional elderly care has experienced only modest changes in terms of more men becoming professional carers. Nor has the status of elderly care changed profoundly. This is surprising, if we consider the increasing illegitimacy of status differentials in the post-modern world. Changing gender identities does not necessarily lead to conflict unless these changes are perceived as controversial or threatening. On the other hand, the lack of changes in relation to gender equality for example, continuing low status, lower wages and misrecognition, may provide the spark for mobilization and struggles.
