Competence is strongly linked to cognitive ability and social experience. Research has shown that adolescents aged 14 or above have the same decision-making capacity as adults when given a hypothetical scenario. Notwithstanding this, the capacity for a young person to consent is linked to their cognitive development rather than age alone. The young persons’ level of schooling, their ability to function in other areas of their life, and additional responsibilities, such as employment, are also important factors to be taken into consideration.
