The primary treatment of schizophrenia in later life consists of long-term use of antipsychotic medications (neuroleptics), such as haloperidol, which has been proven effective in managing schizophrenia symptoms (e.g., delusions and hallucinations) of many older patients. But these medications have a high risk of potentially disabling and persistent side effects.
