Outliers affect the mean value of the data but have little effect on

the median. Mean is the average of values that is calculated by

dividing the sum by the number of

items in the set. Once an extreme value (outlier) is added in, the mean will change correspondingly. However, the median is the middle value when data are arranged in numeric order or the average of the two middle numbers when the set has an even number of data. As long as there are as many points to the left as there are on the right, the median stays fixed, even when some of those values become extreme.
