This group has a suicide rate four times that of the overall rate of suicide for all Americans. Death by firearms is the most common means for older adults. Older adults are twice as likely to use firearms as younger adults to commit suicide. Risk factors include depression, prior suicide attempts, hopeless feelings or social isolation, changes in family configurations due to death or other reasons, access to firearms, alcohol or medication misuse, and/or difficulty adjusting to change.
