The conceptual definition of physical abuse by the National Center on Elder Abuse is “The intentional action of a person who stands in a position of trust to a vulnerable older adult (aged 65 or greater) that may result in bodily injury or physical pain of the older adult” (Center on elder abuse, 2015). First identified as “granny battering” by Baker in 1975, the definition of physical abuse in older adults has evolved based on findings in the fields of child abuse and intimate partner violence (Baker, 1975). Although more closely aligned with intimate partner violence than child abuse, EM is further defined by the added vulnerability associated with aging and the identification of the abuser as a trusted caregiver. According to Ziminski et al. (2013), the “IPV (intimate partner violence) literature regarding injuries is fairly well advanced and pertinent to the study of elder abuse but rarely applied to elder abuse”.
