There are no universal guidelines, but personally, I recommend these: 1) Exploration through multiple methods such as listing, observation, and other means of data collection; 2) Inferential thinking, which leads to clinical judgments that are grounded in empirical knowledge and guide decision making; 3) Evaluation of the capacity of a client’s functioning and skills, as well as of the stressors of social environments that may impede a client’s optional functioning; 4) Problem definition, those are well defined and agreed on by the client and social worker; 5) Intervention planning with the client, which leads to more effective outcomes.
