What is the limitation of posttest-only design with nonequivalent groups?

When participants are not randomly assigned to the treatment and the control groups, the groups are likely to be dissimilar in some ways. Even though we can take steps to make them as similar as possible, there remains the possibility of important (observable & unobservable) confounders that cannot be controlled.
