When performing a cost-benefit analysis of preventative programs, we take into account various outcomes such as crime rates, educational metrics (including graduation rates, test scores, further education after high school, special education rates, grade repetition), employment and earning potentials, substance use prevalence, public assistance usage, teen birth rates, instances of child abuse and neglect, and health and mental health services utilization. The benefits gained from investing in underprivileged communities are significant, including savings in criminal justice expenses (court proceedings, policing, and correctional services), private security costs (like alarms, private guards, and security systems), mitigating urban decay (like job loss and population migration), property theft, medical care for crime victims, and improvements in individual wellbeing (such as reducing pain and suffering and enhancing quality of life).
