Dependent and independent variables are variables in mathematical modeling, statistical modeling and experimental sciences. A symbol that stands for an arbitrary input is called an independent variable, while a symbol that stands for an arbitrary output is called a dependent variable.

Does it also mean that there is a causal relationship between IV and DV? what do we call them if we do not know if the variable is an outcome or the one that influences others yet?
