When evaluating a program that provides prison visiting tours for youth, it's essential to assess its impact on the participant's understanding of the criminal justice system, empathy development, and potential deterrence from criminal behavior. Here are five key points to consider:

Knowledge and understanding: Evaluate the program's effectiveness in increasing the participants' knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system, prison environment, and the consequences of criminal behavior. Assess the extent to which the program provides accurate and age-appropriate information, educational materials, and interactive experiences to enhance their understanding of the justice system.

Attitude and empathy development: Measure the program's impact on the participants' attitudes towards prisoners and their ability to empathize with incarcerated individuals. Assess whether the program promotes empathy, fosters a sense of social responsibility, and challenges negative stereotypes or biases. Collect qualitative data through surveys, interviews, or focus groups to gauge changes in attitudes and empathy levels.

Reflective thinking and critical analysis: Evaluate whether the program encourages reflective thinking and critical analysis among the participants. Assess whether they are provided with opportunities to discuss and reflect on the causes and consequences of crime, the challenges faced by prisoners, and possible alternatives to criminal behavior. Measure the participants' ability to engage in thoughtful discussions and consider different perspectives.

Behavior and decision-making: Assess the program's impact on the participants' behavior and decision-making regarding involvement in criminal activities. Evaluate whether the program contributes to the participants' understanding of the potential consequences of their actions and the impact on victims, families, and communities. Measure changes in their attitudes towards criminal behavior and their intentions to make positive choices.

Long-term effects: Consider the long-term effects of the program on the participants. Evaluate whether the experience of the prison visiting tour has a lasting impact on their attitudes, behaviors, and future decision-making. Measure the sustainability of the program's effects by conducting follow-up assessments after a certain period to determine if the program's influence extends beyond the immediate post-tour period.
