Age itself is a risk factor for some physical and psychiatric disorders with great social implications. On the physical side, the increased prevalence of conditions such as hypertension and cardiovascular disorders or diabetes has been documented. Similarly, in relation to psychiatric disorder, it is clear that age is the main risk factor for highly disabling conditions such as dementia in general and Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia in particular. Disability due all such conditions is an inevitable corollary, resulting in the “frailty” problem described in the previous section. However, the potential of social factors in the etiology of these conditions should not be minimized. For example, it is now clear that poor education is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, and, on the contrary, an active lifestyle is protective.
