When conducting poverty program evaluations, it is crucial to uphold ethical considerations to ensure the well-being and rights of participants and to maintain the integrity of the evaluation process. Here are five key ethical considerations:

Informed consent: Obtain informed consent from participants, ensuring that they fully understand the purpose, nature, and potential risks and benefits of the evaluation. Participants should have the right to voluntarily participate or withdraw from the evaluation without facing negative consequences. Informed consent should be obtained in a culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate manner.

Confidentiality and privacy: Safeguard the confidentiality and privacy of participants. Collect and handle data in a way that protects participants' identities and ensures their personal information remains confidential. Data should be securely stored and shared only with authorized individuals involved in the evaluation. Anonymizing data and using aggregated information can help protect participants' privacy.

Power dynamics and vulnerability: Recognize power imbalances between evaluators and participants, particularly in poverty contexts where participants may be vulnerable. Ensure that evaluations are conducted respectfully and equitably, giving participants a voice and actively involving them in the evaluation process. Implement measures to minimize harm and avoid exploiting vulnerable individuals or communities.

Equity and fairness: Promote equity and fairness throughout the evaluation process. Ensure that evaluation methods and tools are culturally appropriate, accessible, and inclusive, taking into account the diverse backgrounds and experiences of participants. Avoid biases and discriminatory practices that could disproportionately impact certain groups or perpetuate inequalities.

Transparency and accountability: Maintain transparency and accountability in the evaluation process. Communicate the scope, methodology, and findings of the evaluation to participants, stakeholders, and the wider public. Ensure that evaluation results are reported accurately and objectively, avoiding misrepresentation or selective reporting that could lead to biased interpretations or misinform policy decisions.
