In general, reasons for an individual’s substance use include some complex factors that have been unique to the individual, ranging from psychological factors such as curiosity, risk-taking and coping, to peer influence and environmental influence. A study has suggested that parents had a huge influence on young people’s attitude towards substance use (Lander et al., 2013).

Lander, L., Howsare, J., & Byrne, M. (2013). The impact of substance use disorders on families and children: from theory to practice. Social work in public health, 28(3-4), 194–205. https://doi.org/10.1080/19371918.2013.759005

Someone told me that a pretest is a more important component of a quasi-experimental design. Could you please elaborate more for me, taking the older adult group as an example?

The current restrictions and rules on public gatherings may make older adults more isolated. Therefore, we hope to understand the potential difference in the subjective feelings of social isolation between community-dwelling and institutionalized elders. But the reality does not allow us to adopt randomization. Could you please give us some advice?

There are many dropout cases in my samples of older adults living in the community. I wonder can I use the pretest score to examine differences among the remaining group members?

If our team plans to conduct a longitudinal study to examine the impacts of a program for older adults, may I ask the function of its pretest?

Hi, I realized that it seems the concept “outcome” is different from the term “output”. Taking the grandparent training project as an example, what is the “outcome’ referable?
