When working with young offenders during program evaluation, consider the following tips:

Establish trust and rapport: Build a trusting and non-judgmental relationship with young offenders. Create a safe and supportive environment where they feel comfortable sharing their experiences and perspectives. Show empathy, respect, and cultural sensitivity to foster trust and rapport.

Use age-appropriate methods: Utilize evaluation methods and tools that are suitable for young offenders. Consider their developmental stage, literacy levels, and communication preferences. Implement age-appropriate surveys, interviews, focus groups, or creative activities that allow for meaningful participation and expression.

Ensure confidentiality and privacy: Assure young offenders that their participation and responses will be kept confidential and that their privacy will be respected. Emphasize the importance of maintaining confidentiality to encourage honest and open feedback. Obtain necessary consent and adhere to ethical guidelines when collecting and reporting data.

Incorporate youth voice and participation: Involve young offenders in the evaluation process to ensure their perspectives are heard and valued. Seek their input on evaluation design, data collection methods, and interpretation of findings. Encourage their active participation by actively listening, acknowledging their contributions, and incorporating their suggestions into program improvements.

Provide support and resources: Offer support and resources to young offenders throughout the evaluation process. Provide clear explanations of the evaluation purpose and process, address any concerns or questions they may have, and offer assistance when needed. Consider providing information on available support services or referrals to other relevant programs that can address their specific needs.
